Airtel Malawi has achieved a landmark step in the nation’s digital evolution by launching Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) across the entire country and activating 57 new 5G sites in 10 districts. The development strengthens Malawi’s position among Africa’s rapidly advancing markets for next-generation telecommunications, driving both economic growth and social progress.
Speaking on the announcement, Airtel Malawi Managing Director Aashish Dutt stated that VoLTE will transform the calling experience for millions of customers, offering superior voice clarity, near-instant call connection, and uninterrupted high-speed data usage during calls. This represents a significant leap forward from conventional circuit-switched voice services, delivering greater reliability and performance nationwide.
In parallel, the expanded 5G network brings ultra-high speeds, ultra-low latency, and increased capacity, opening new possibilities in key sectors including commerce, telemedicine, online education, modern agriculture, and connected home technologies. Airtel highlighted that 5G will serve as a critical catalyst for digital innovation, providing the infrastructure required to realise Malawi’s long-term national aspirations.
The initiatives are fully aligned with the Malawi 2063 agenda, which prioritises inclusive, technology-enabled development. Airtel extended gratitude to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) for their ongoing collaboration, underscoring that sustained public-private partnership is vital to creating a truly connected society.
Looking ahead, Airtel Malawi confirmed that additional 5G sites will be switched on in the coming months as part of its continued investment in digital acceleration. Customers with compatible handsets are urged to enable VoLTE and 5G features to immediately benefit from the enhanced services now available across the network.
