Zenith Bank, Mastercard Introduce Affordable Essential Debit Card for Nigeria’s Underserved Millions

Mastercard and Zenith Bank Plc have officially introduced the Mastercard Essential Debit Card, an affordable and scalable payment solution designed to bring secure digital transactions to millions of underserved Nigerians, particularly low-income earners and those previously excluded from formal banking.

The launch comes as Nigeria’s digital payment ecosystem records explosive growth. According to the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), electronic payment transactions soared to ₦1.08 quadrillion in 2024, representing an 80% increase from ₦600 trillion in 2023. Point-of-sale (PoS) transactions also rose 81% year-on-year to ₦19.4 trillion, underscoring surging consumer confidence in digital channels and the urgent need for accessible financial tools.

Speaking at the launch, Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Manager and Area Business Head, West Africa at Mastercard, said:

“At Mastercard, we believe that inclusion fuels innovation, and innovation must be inclusive by design. The Essential Debit Card offers a gateway to economic opportunity for millions. Through this collaboration with Zenith Bank, we are scaling impact by meeting people where they are, with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.”

Dame (Dr.) Adaora Umeoji, OON, Group Managing Director/CEO of Zenith Bank Plc, added:

“This launch aligns with our ambition to drive financial inclusion at a larger scale. By offering an affordable, secure, and practical digital payment solution, we’re empowering more Nigerians to participate in the formal economy, supporting not only individual progress but national economic growth. Together, we’re breaking barriers to everyday commerce and moving a step closer toward closing the financial inclusion gap in Nigeria.

Key features of the Essential Debit Card include:
• Choice of physical or virtual card issuance
• Simplified onboarding process
• Significantly reduced issuance and maintenance costs
• Full compatibility with Nigeria’s existing payment infrastructure

Zenith Bank began rolling out the card in July 2025 through its extensive network of branches and digital channels, becoming one of the first tier-one banks in Nigeria to adopt Mastercard’s Essential Debit framework. The partnership combines Mastercard’s globally trusted technology and network with Zenith Bank’s deep market reach to deliver a payment solution tailored to the daily realities of Nigerian consumers and small merchants.

The initiative reinforces both organizations’ commitment to inclusive growth and supports Nigeria’s transition to a more digitally empowered and financially inclusive economy.
