Egypt Strengthens Position in Global Digital Services Market Through Expansion of Freelance Economy
Egypt is intensifying efforts to grow its presence in the international digital services sector, with a strategic focus on expanding freelance participation as a key driver of export-led growth in the technology industry.
Officials from the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA) noted that shifts in global labour patterns are pushing freelance work from a supplementary income source into a central component of modern digital economies. This transition is increasingly shaping how countries compete for cross-border digital services contracts.
Speaking at WorkShift Summit 2026, Mahmoud Sofrata highlighted that Egypt’s growing freelance ecosystem is already contributing to the country’s digital export performance and strengthening its integration into global outsourcing markets.
He noted that Egypt currently holds a strong position in the global freelance landscape, supported by a large annual output of university graduates, including a significant number of engineering and technology professionals. This steady talent pipeline continues to reinforce the country’s role as a competitive source of skilled digital labour in the EMEA region.
Despite this progress, officials acknowledged that Egypt is still in the early stages of fully capturing the potential of the global freelance economy, particularly as competition increases among countries offering digital outsourcing services.
ITIDA has been expanding training and capacity-building initiatives such as Egypt FWD and ITIDA Gigs, aimed at equipping freelancers with the technical, communication, and client management skills required to compete in international markets. The agency is also developing new support measures to strengthen the competitiveness of local digital professionals.
The freelance sector is increasingly seen as a structural component of Egypt’s broader economic strategy, contributing to national digital service exports and supporting long-term growth in the technology sector, which already accounts for a meaningful share of the country’s GDP.
Officials at the summit emphasised that sustained investment in human capital development will be critical to achieving future targets in digital services exports, while reinforcing Egypt’s position as a regional hub for technology-enabled offshoring and remote work services.
