DIGITAL SKILLS AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP

NITDA and TikTok Launch Digital Commerce Initiative to Empower Nigerian SMEs

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has joined forces with TikTok to introduce a Digital Commerce Lab aimed at helping small and medium-sized enterprises build the capabilities needed to succeed in an increasingly digital marketplace.

The initiative, unveiled in Lagos, is focused on equipping entrepreneurs with practical knowledge and tools that can help them strengthen their online presence, connect with customers more effectively, and unlock new opportunities for business growth through digital channels.

Speaking on behalf of NITDA’s Director General, Kashifu Inuwa CCIE, the agency’s Director of Stakeholder Management and Partnerships, Dr Aristotle Onumo, highlighted the growing importance of digital platforms in shaping the future of commerce. He noted that businesses that embrace technology are better positioned to improve efficiency, expand their reach, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving economy.

A major component of the programme is a strategic collaboration between NITDA and TikTok to extend digital commerce education to entrepreneurs operating beyond major urban centres. The partnership seeks to ensure that business owners in underserved and remote communities can also benefit from emerging opportunities within the digital economy.

As part of the initiative, a 20,000-dollar pilot Train the Trainer programme will be implemented through NITDA’s DL4ALL network. The project will provide facilitators with instructional resources, training guides, and practical teaching materials designed to help them transfer digital commerce skills to SMEs across the country.

Officials explained that this cascading approach is intended to multiply impact by creating a network of local trainers capable of reaching wider business communities and supporting grassroots digital inclusion.

The Digital Commerce Lab is expected to enhance the capacity of Nigerian entrepreneurs to leverage online platforms for marketing, customer engagement, and business expansion. By strengthening digital competencies among SMEs, the initiative aims to contribute to job creation, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.

Stakeholders at the launch emphasised that the collaboration aligns with Nigeria’s broader ambitions to accelerate digital transformation and build a more inclusive economy where technology serves as an enabler of opportunity.

The partnership also reflects a growing trend of cooperation between public institutions and global technology companies to bridge digital skills gaps and equip businesses with the knowledge required to compete in both local and international markets.
