DE-CIX Launches New Open-Source MCP Server for AI-Powered Network Control
Through the new server, network engineers can use AI agents to identify connectivity options, including cloud on-ramps, book and scale connectivity services, and obtain real-time information about service status.

DE-CIX, a global Internet, Cloud and AI Exchange operator headquartered in Germany, has launched an open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that allows businesses to search for, procure, deploy and manage network connections using natural language through AI agents.
Available for download, the DE-CIX MCP server can be integrated with compatible AI applications and agent platforms, including large language models (LLMs) that support MCP. The technology is designed to simplify access to DE-CIX systems by allowing customers to manage network infrastructure through their preferred AI tools.
MCP servers enable different systems to communicate and integrate more easily, reducing the complexity associated with managing multiple application programming interfaces (APIs). Through the new server, network engineers can use AI agents to identify connectivity options, including cloud on-ramps, book and scale connectivity services, and obtain real-time information about service status.
The server can also generate code for automating tasks involving DE-CIX services, reducing the need for engineers to consult extensive documentation to identify and implement individual API operations.
“A recent DE-CIX survey of IT and infrastructure decision makers found that IT teams are, on average, still spending more than 11 hours, or a full working day, each week troubleshooting connectivity issues. Network architecture is becoming increasingly complex, meaning that network operators and enterprise IT teams are faced with multiple challenges to build and operate their infrastructure according to their needs. The DE-CIX MCP server, based on the open-source standard IX-API, responds to the needs of customers for simpler interconnection. This is the next step in the ongoing process of automating the DE-CIX platform, making interconnection on-demand, programmable, observable, modular, and secure.”
– Dr. Thomas King, CTO, DE-CIX
The MCP server builds on DE-CIX’s involvement in the IX-API project, an open-source initiative the company has supported since its launch in 2019. IX-API aims to standardise interactions between internet exchange platforms and facilitate communication and collaboration among stakeholders across the digital ecosystem.
DE-CIX said it would continue developing the MCP server as part of its broader efforts to automate interconnection services and make them more programmable and accessible to customers.
The launch reflects the growing use of AI agents to support infrastructure management, allowing businesses to automate operational tasks and manage connectivity services through natural-language instructions rather than relying solely on manual processes and conventional API integrations.
