Rwanda Joins Continental Satellite Navigation Initiative to Strengthen Positioning Infrastructure

Rwanda has taken a major step in expanding its space and digital infrastructure ambitions through a new partnership aimed at improving satellite navigation services across Africa.

The agreement was signed in Kigali between the Rwanda Space Agency and the team leading the Augmented Navigation for Africa initiative. Through the partnership, Rwanda becomes one of the participating countries supporting the development of a continent-wide navigation system designed to deliver more precise and dependable positioning services.

As part of the arrangement, Rwanda will establish and manage an ANGA Mission Control Centre, a critical facility that will contribute to the operation and monitoring of the programme’s navigation network. The centre is expected to play an important role in supporting the delivery of enhanced positioning, navigation, and timing services across multiple sectors.

The collaboration is intended to improve the adoption of advanced navigation technologies in industries where accuracy and reliability are essential. Areas expected to benefit include aviation, transport systems, agriculture, infrastructure planning, and other sectors that increasingly rely on location-based services and geospatial data.

The initiative is being coordinated by the Agency for Air Navigation Safety in Africa and Madagascar, which is working to establish a satellite-based augmentation system tailored to the operational and developmental needs of African countries.

Programme leaders described the partnership as an important step toward building stronger regional cooperation in space technology and digital infrastructure. They noted that expanding participation across the continent will help accelerate the deployment of navigation services capable of supporting economic growth, innovation, and public safety.

Rwanda’s involvement further highlights the country’s growing investment in emerging technologies and reinforces its position as an active contributor to Africa’s evolving space ecosystem. The partnership is also expected to support broader efforts to strengthen regional connectivity, technological self-reliance, and sustainable development through the use of advanced space-based solutions.
