Claudflare. has released its sixth annual Year in Review report providing one of the most detailed overviews of Internet trends and developments throughout 2025. Drawing from data across its extensive global network and the Cloudflare Radar platform the report examines worldwide Internet traffic patterns usage behaviors and emerging security challenges.
The findings reveal a 19 percent year over year increase in global Internet traffic underscoring the growing reliance on digital infrastructure for daily personal and professional needs. A key transformation in 2025 involved the shift from intensive AI model training to widespread AI inference accompanied by significant progress in artificial intelligence capabilities integrated across online services.
On the security front post quantum encryption achieved a major milestone by securing 52 percent of all human generated Internet traffic offering protection against potential future quantum computing threats. Despite this advancement cyber threats intensified with Cloudflare observing over 25 record breaking distributed denial of service DDoS attacks highlighting the escalating nature of cyber warfare.
Cloudflare CEO and co founder Matthew Prince described 2025 as a year of profound Internet evolution fueled by AI innovation and increasingly advanced adversaries. He emphasized that while the period delivered critical milestones in AI advancements and post quantum encryption it also revealed substantial vulnerabilities in online security and content ecosystems reinforcing the need for enhanced resilience across the global Internet.
Additional Internet trends noted in the report include Google and Meta maintaining their dominance as the top Internet services for the fourth straight year while ChatGPT continued to lead in the generative AI category. Among automated traffic Googles crawling bot stood out as the predominant AI bot significantly outpacing competitors.
Cyber attack patterns evolved as well with civil society and non profit organizations emerging as the most frequently targeted sector for the first time possibly due to the high value of their data. Infrastructure disruptions showed government actions responsible for nearly half of major global Internet outages while incidents from cable damage decreased notably and power related failures rose.
Connectivity performance reached new highs in Europe where multiple countries exceeded average download speeds of 200 Mbps with Spain achieving the top ranking worldwide for overall Internet quality.
These insights derive from anonymized aggregated data via Cloudflare Radar supported by the companys network operating in more than 330 cities across over 120 countries combined with observations from the popular 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver.
Through this Year in Review Cloudflare aims to equip governments enterprises and individuals with greater understanding of the dynamic Internet landscape to foster improved security measures and build stronger digital resilience as dependence on Internet traffic and AI advancements continues to expand globally.
