Africa has marked a major milestone in its digital evolution with the launch of its first artificial intelligence (AI) data center, located in Uganda. The project a partnership between Synectics Technologies, Schneider Electric, Nvidia, and Turner & Townsend represents a $1.2 billion investment designed to strengthen the continent’s digital sovereignty and AI capacity.
Set on 80 acres of land, the facility will operate on 100 megawatts of renewable energy, reflecting Africa’s growing commitment to sustainable technology infrastructure. Its modular design will allow for future expansion and increased computing power as demand for data processing and AI applications rises across the continent.
The Uganda AI Data Center is more than just a piece of infrastructure it’s a statement of intent. Africa currently holds less than 1% of global data center capacity, and the majority of its digital information is still hosted overseas. By bringing high-performance computing closer to home, the new center aims to localize data processing, improve cybersecurity, and ensure compliance with emerging data protection laws across more than 30 African countries.
A key feature of the project is the creation of an AI Center of Excellence, which will operate under a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model to guarantee local ownership and knowledge transfer. The center will provide advanced training and research capabilities for sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, climate modeling, and fintech areas where AI can have the most immediate social and economic impact.
Expected to go live by mid-2026, the initiative represents a bold step toward closing Africa’s infrastructure gap. With world-class partners and a strong focus on digital independence, Uganda’s new AI data hub could set the tone for similar developments across the continent.
This launch sends a clear message: Africa is no longer waiting for the future of technology it’s building it, one innovation at a time.
