The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical gaps in healthcare systems across Africa, from uncertainty around hospital availability to fragmented medical records and limited digital coordination. While healthcare services existed, patients often lacked clarity, continuity, and confidence when accessing care.
Seun Paul Olatunji is a Nigerian digital technology entrepreneur and HealthTech innovator who responded to these challenges by launching MediAID Plus, a digital healthcare access, records, and analytics platform introduced in the first quarter of 2021. MediAID Plus combines real time provider availability, digital medical records management, advanced healthcare analytics, and enterprise grade data security to improve how healthcare services are accessed and managed.
In this interview conducted in February 2022 with The Nation newspaper, Seun discusses the motivation behind MediAID Plus, the technology underpinning the platform, and its role in shaping the future of digital healthcare.
Q&A Interview
Q: What inspired you to create MediAID Plus, and how did COVID-19 influence its launch?
Seun Paul Olatunji:
The COVID-19 pandemic was a defining moment. During that period, many people were unsure which hospitals were available, responsive, or safe to visit. At the same time, healthcare providers were struggling with fragmented data and manual processes. This combination of uncertainty and inefficiency revealed a major gap in the healthcare system.
I began developing MediAID Plus as a digital solution to introduce clarity, coordination, and structure into healthcare access. The platform was launched in the first quarter of 2021 to help users identify available hospitals in real time, while also supporting providers with digital tools for managing medical records and healthcare data more efficiently.
Q: What core problem does MediAID Plus solve within the healthcare ecosystem?
Seun:
MediAID Plus addresses fragmentation on two levels: patient access and healthcare data management. For patients, the challenge is uncertainty, not knowing which hospital to approach or whether services are available. For providers, the challenge is managing medical information securely and efficiently.
The platform bridges these gaps by enabling users to see which onboarded hospitals are actively online in real time, while also providing hospitals with digital systems for medical records management, analytics, and reporting. This creates a more connected and transparent healthcare experience for all parties.
Q: How does MediAID Plus function as a digital healthcare platform in practice?
Seun:
MediAID Plus operates as a multi-layered digital health infrastructure. On the access side, users can identify and interact with hospitals based on real time availability rather than static listings. On the operational side, healthcare providers can manage digital medical records, organise patient data, and generate comprehensive medical analytics and reports.
The platform is built with scalability in mind, allowing healthcare institutions to transition from manual systems to structured digital workflows without disrupting service delivery.
Q: Data security is critical in HealthTech. How does MediAID Plus address this?
Seun:
Healthcare data requires the highest level of responsibility. MediAID Plus is designed with enterprise grade security, ensuring medical data is protected, encrypted, and handled in compliance with healthcare data standards. Security is not treated as an add-on but as a core architectural principle of the platform, giving both patients and providers confidence in how information is stored and accessed.
Q: What role did you personally play in building MediAID Plus?
Seun:
I was directly involved in the product vision, platform architecture, and digital strategy. This included defining key features such as real time hospital availability, digital medical records management, analytics capabilities, and security frameworks. I worked closely with technical teams to ensure the platform addressed real healthcare needs while remaining scalable and compliant.
Q: What were the main challenges in developing such a comprehensive HealthTech platform?
Seun:
One challenge was balancing real-time functionality with reliability, particularly in environments with inconsistent connectivity. Another was designing systems that healthcare professionals could adopt easily without extensive retraining. We addressed these challenges by prioritising intuitive design, modular architecture, and continuous feedback from healthcare providers during development.
Q: How do you measure the impact of MediAID Plus as of early 2022?
Seun:
Impact is measured through reduced uncertainty in healthcare access, improved provider responsiveness, and more efficient management of medical data. The ability for users to see which hospitals are actively online has significantly improved decision making, while providers benefit from structured digital records and actionable medical analytics that support better care delivery.
Q: What clearly differentiates MediAID Plus from other digital health platforms available in 2022?
Seun:
MediAID Plus uniquely combines real-time healthcare access with operational healthcare infrastructure. Many platforms focus on either discovery or records management. MediAID Plus integrates both, allowing users to see hospital availability in real time while enabling hospitals to manage medical records, analytics, and reports securely within the same ecosystem.
Q: How does MediAID Plus fit into the broader digital health transformation in Africa?
Seun:
MediAID Plus demonstrates how digital technology can modernise healthcare systems without replacing existing institutions. By improving access, data management, and transparency, the platform contributes to a more connected and resilient healthcare ecosystem aligned with global digital health standards.
Q: Looking ahead from 2022, what is your long term vision for MediAID Plus?
Seun:
My vision is to continue developing MediAID Plus as a foundational digital healthcare infrastructure that supports access, data integrity, and informed decision making across healthcare systems. I also aim to contribute to broader discussions around digital health policy, interoperability, and sustainable technology adoption.
Closing Quote
“MediAID Plus was built to remove uncertainty from healthcare; not only by showing which hospitals are available in real time, but by giving providers secure digital systems to manage, analyse, and protect medical data. That combination is what makes meaningful digital health transformation possible.”
