Girls in ICT Day serves as an annual global observance held on the fourth Thursday of April. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) launched the initiative to promote gender equality in the technology sector and to inspire the next generation of female innovators and leaders.
In 2026, the edition places special emphasis on artificial intelligence and its growing role in transforming societies. The focus highlights the importance of ensuring that young women become active creators of technology rather than passive users.
This global movement encourages girls and young women worldwide to explore studies and careers in ICT and STEM fields. Mozambique joins many other countries in marking the day with targeted activities that support inclusion and skills development.
The Communications Regulatory Authority of Mozambique (INCM) will lead the national Girls in ICT Day 2026 events. The programme features a series of lectures, training sessions, mentoring activities, and knowledge sharing engagements.
These sessions highlight the role of women in the digital sector while promoting inclusion, skills development, and access to opportunities within Mozambique’s technology ecosystem. The event also spotlights the INCM Technological Incubator, known as ThinkLab Mozambique, as a key platform for fostering digital entrepreneurship, innovation, and the development of socially impactful technological solutions.
The morning programme of Girls in ICT Day 2026 will take place at the INCM auditorium and will remain open to the public. It will include inspiring lectures and knowledge sharing sessions focused on artificial intelligence, digital skills, and career pathways in ICT and STEM.
In the afternoon, selected mentoring sessions will target approximately 30 girls who registered electronically. These targeted activities provide personalized guidance and practical insights to strengthen interest in ICT careers among young female participants.
Through these structured engagements, INCM aims to build a more inclusive and innovation-driven digital future in Mozambique.
Artificial intelligence stands at the forefront of global technological advancement. The 2026 theme, “AI for Development: Girls Shaping the Digital Future,” underscores the need for girls and young women to actively participate in creating AI-powered solutions that address local and societal challenges.
By engaging in Girls in ICT Day 2026 activities, participants gain exposure to emerging technologies, including geospatial intelligence and digital innovation. Such exposure helps bridge gender gaps in the technology sector and supports Mozambique’s broader goals for digital transformation.
ThinkLab Mozambique plays a vital role in this ecosystem by supporting startups and entrepreneurs in developing practical technological solutions. The incubator encourages young innovators, including girls, to turn ideas into impactful projects in areas such as health, finance, transport, and artificial intelligence.
Girls in ICT Day 2026 promotes greater female representation in ICT and STEM fields. Encouraging girls to pursue these careers helps create a more balanced technology workforce and drives inclusive innovation across Mozambique.
Mentoring and training sessions during the event equip participants with foundational digital skills and confidence to explore technology related opportunities. These efforts contribute to long-term national development by building a diverse pool of talent capable of shaping the digital economy.
