The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has reinforced its dedication to enhancing inter-agency collaboration as a crucial driver for Nigeria’s digital transformation. This commitment was demonstrated during a high-level strategic engagement where representatives from NITDA and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) convened to outline pathways for comprehensive cooperation in advancing the nation’s digital economy.
Dr. Dimie Shively Warowie, PhD, Director of Corporate Planning and Strategy at NITDA, represented the agency’s Director-General Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi during this pivotal meeting with the Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau of the International Telecommunication Union. The discussions focused extensively on establishing frameworks for delivering universal connectivity that is both meaningful and affordable to all Nigerian citizens while simultaneously strengthening safeguards within the digital space.
During the strategic engagement, the ITU representative expressed strong appreciation for Nigeria’s remarkable regulatory advancements in the telecommunications and digital sectors. The international body specifically highlighted Nigeria’s achievement of G5-level collaborative regulation, a significant milestone that positions the country among progressive digital economies globally.
The ITU also acknowledged the visionary leadership of the Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijjani, whose strategic direction has been instrumental in driving Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda forward.
The Telecommunication Development Bureau reaffirmed its unwavering support for NITDA’s initiatives, pledging to provide comprehensive technical assistance and advanced cybersecurity tools.
This support extends to backing various programs designed to promote inclusive connectivity across Nigeria and establishing functional digital transformation centers throughout the nation. These centers will serve as hubs for technology adoption, skills development, and innovation incubation in communities nationwide.
Speaking on behalf of NITDA’s Director-General, Dr. Warowie presented a comprehensive overview of the agency’s strategic priorities that will guide Nigeria’s digital transformation over the coming years. These priorities encompass four critical pillars essential for building a robust digital economy. First, digital skills development remains paramount, with programs designed to equip Nigerian youth and professionals with competencies required for the digital economy.
Second, cybersecurity resilience has been identified as a non-negotiable foundation for protecting critical digital infrastructure and ensuring citizen confidence in digital services.
Third, innovation and digital entrepreneurship support mechanisms will be strengthened to nurture homegrown technology solutions and create employment opportunities in the digital sector.
Fourth, the harmonization of regulatory frameworks and technical standards will ensure consistency across Nigeria’s digital ecosystem, facilitating seamless operations for businesses and service providers while maintaining high standards of service delivery and consumer protection.
Both NITDA and the ITU Telecommunication Development Bureau identified several priority areas where immediate collaboration will yield transformative results for Nigeria’s digital transformation. Digital literacy programs will be expanded to bridge the knowledge gap and ensure citizens can effectively utilize digital technologies for economic and social advancement. Cybersecurity capacity building initiatives will equip government agencies, businesses, and individuals with tools and knowledge to defend against evolving cyber threats.
Innovation support mechanisms will be established to accelerate the development and commercialization of indigenous technology solutions. School connectivity programs will ensure educational institutions have reliable internet access, enabling digital learning opportunities for students across the country. Regulatory alignment between Nigerian frameworks and international standards will facilitate global competitiveness and attract foreign investment into the digital sector.
This renewed partnership between NITDA and the ITU represents more than diplomatic engagement; it embodies a shared commitment to leveraging institutional synergies for tangible outcomes in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey. By combining NITDA’s local expertise and regulatory authority with ITU’s global technical resources and best practices, both organizations aim to accelerate progress toward a more inclusive digital economy where no Nigerian is left behind.
The collaboration also emphasizes security as a fundamental enabler of digital transformation. As Nigeria expands digital services and connectivity, robust cybersecurity measures will protect citizens, businesses, and government operations from malicious actors. This dual focus on expansion and security ensures sustainable growth in the digital sector.
The strategic partnership positions Nigeria to build a competitive digital economy that can attract international investment, create quality employment opportunities, and improve service delivery across sectors.
Through continued collaboration, technical capacity building, and policy harmonization, NITDA and the ITU are laying the groundwork for a digitally empowered Nigeria that serves as a model for digital transformation across Africa.
