Ghana Introduces Digital E-Visa Platform to Strengthen Regional Travel and Economic Connectivity

Ghana has launched a new electronic visa platform as part of efforts to modernise immigration processes, simplify travel access, and strengthen cross-border movement across the continent.

The digital system was officially introduced by President John Dramani Mahama during activities commemorating the 63rd African Union Day on May 25, 2026. The platform transitions visa processing from traditional manual procedures to a fully digital experience aimed at improving application speed, transparency, and border security.

Alongside the launch, the government announced a major policy change for African travellers. Citizens travelling with African passports will no longer be required to pay visa fees when entering Ghana, a move positioned as part of the country’s commitment to supporting regional integration and easier movement across the continent.

Government officials stated that the initiative aligns with broader ambitions to improve public service delivery through digital innovation while positioning Ghana as a more accessible destination for tourism, business, and investment. Authorities also indicated that the policy supports wider continental goals linked to regional cooperation and economic inclusion.

The development is also expected to strengthen objectives connected to the African Continental Free Trade Area, whose secretariat is based in Accra. By reducing travel barriers and improving movement across borders, Ghana aims to support stronger trade links, tourism activity, and regional economic participation.

Officials added that the e-visa platform will gradually connect with wider border and passenger information systems to improve traveller screening, coordination, and overall visitor experience, as Ghana continues expanding its digital government infrastructure.
