Google has rolled out AI Overviews and AI Mode in 13 African languages, marking a major step toward making advanced AI search more accessible and culturally relevant across the continent. This expansion allows millions of users to search, learn, and create content in their native languages, moving beyond the limitations of English-only tools.
AI Overviews provides concise, AI-generated summaries of search results, complete with reliable links for further reading. Meanwhile, AI Mode offers interactive, conversational experiences where users can engage through text, voice inputs, or even images to receive personalized and detailed responses. These features are now available in languages such as Afrikaans, Akan, Amharic, Hausa, Kinyarwanda, Afaan Oromoo, Somali, Sesotho, Kiswahili, Setswana, Wolof, Yorùbá, and isiZulu.
The rollout draws heavily from Google’s Waxal project, an initiative that integrates machine learning, in-depth linguistic research, and direct input from local communities. This approach has strengthened AI’s ability to understand and generate content in diverse African languages, ensuring responses feel natural and contextually appropriate.
Users can access these enhanced tools directly through the Google app on Android or iOS devices. By simply searching in their preferred language, individuals across Africa can now enjoy quick overviews or dive into deeper discussions without language barriers.
This development promotes greater inclusivity in technology. Communities in countries like Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Rwanda stand to benefit significantly. For education, students can explore complex topics in their mother tongue. In business, entrepreneurs gain easier access to information and ideas. Creative projects also flourish as users generate content tailored to local contexts.
Google’s commitment to responsible AI continues with this update. It builds on previous global expansions of AI Overviews and introduces AI Mode as a powerful way to explore subjects interactively. The selection of these 13 languages reflects high search usage and growing demand in key regions, prioritizing impact for the largest possible audience.
