The Kapiri Mposhi telecommunications tower was officially inaugurated on 13 February 2026 in a ceremony that marks a significant milestone in Zambia’s digital infrastructure development. The telecommunications tower launch was led by the Honourable Minister of Technology and Science, Mr. Felix C. Mutati, MP, who praised IHS for delivering a cutting-edge facility that promises to transform network coverage and improve the quality of life for residents in Kapiri Mposhi and surrounding areas.
The newly commissioned telecommunications tower is already serving over 7,000 people with uninterrupted digital and mobile services operating 24 hours a day. This infrastructure represents a major leap forward in bridging the digital divide and ensuring that communities in Central Province have access to reliable connectivity for communication, commerce, and essential services.
According to Eng. Otun Adekune, IHS Director of Operations, the Kapiri Mposhi telecommunications tower operates independently from the national electricity grid through an innovative hybrid power system. The telecommunications tower utilizes a combination of generators, lithium batteries, and solar energy to guarantee continuous service delivery regardless of power supply challenges.
The generator charges high-capacity lithium batteries that provide long-lasting power to the telecommunications tower infrastructure. Additionally, a solar energy system serves as a backup power source, ensuring that mobile services and digital connectivity remain available even during extended periods without conventional electricity. This sustainable approach to powering the telecommunications tower demonstrates a commitment to environmental responsibility while maintaining service reliability.
Minister Mutati revealed that the Kapiri Mposhi telecommunications tower is part of a broader infrastructure expansion initiative. Four telecommunications towers have been constructed within Kapiri Mposhi District alone, while fourteen towers have been strategically deployed across Central Province. This extensive telecommunications tower network has dramatically enhanced connectivity throughout the region.
The improved network coverage facilitated by these telecommunications tower installations has enabled more efficient digital transactions and mobile money services. Farmers, traders, and market vendors are experiencing tangible benefits from the enhanced connectivity, with easier access to digital financial services, market information, and communication tools that support their livelihoods and business operations.
Minister Mutati reaffirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring all Zambian citizens have access to reliable network services. Under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, President Hakainde Hichilema, the administration has prioritized digital infrastructure as a cornerstone of national development.
In a significant financial commitment to telecommunications tower expansion, the government has secured USD 100 million in funding from the International Monetary Fund. This substantial investment will finance the construction of 300 additional telecommunications towers across Zambia, bringing connectivity to previously underserved communities and strengthening the national digital infrastructure.
The telecommunications tower deployment strategy focuses on equitable distribution, ensuring that both urban and rural areas benefit from improved network coverage. This approach supports the government’s broader goals of inclusive economic development and ensures that digital services reach all corners of the nation.
At the Kapiri Mposhi telecommunications tower inauguration event, District Commissioner Mr. Hasalama expressed deep gratitude to President Hichilema and the Ministry of Technology and Science for prioritizing the district’s digital infrastructure needs. The telecommunications tower represents a tangible demonstration of the government’s commitment to regional development and technological advancement.
Minister Mutati assured residents that the current telecommunications tower installations are just the beginning of comprehensive coverage expansion. Additional towers will be strategically deployed to ensure complete network coverage and equitable access to digital services across the district and province.
The Minister emphasized that the telecommunications tower infrastructure supports critical government initiatives including mobile digital businesses, social cash transfer programs, and the Farmer Input Support Programme.
