CAC Issues January 2026 Deadline: All PoS Operators Must Register or Cease Operations

The Corporate Affairs Commission has declared a nationwide crackdown on unregistered Point of Sale operators across Nigeria, describing the widespread operation of undocumented agents as a serious threat to the financial system.

According to the commission, thousands of PoS businesses are currently running without the mandatory registration required under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria Agent Banking Regulations.

Starting from 1 January 2026, no individual or business will be allowed to carry out Point of Sale transactions without proper registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission.

The commission has directed security agencies to enforce strict compliance, empowering authorized officers and security agencies to seize or shut down any unregistered PoS terminal found in operation anywhere in the country.

The commission has also issued a strong warning to fintech companies and financial institutions that continue to onboard or provide services to unregistered PoS agents. Such companies will be placed on a regulatory watchlist and reported to the Central Bank of Nigeria for appropriate sanctions.

In a statement released on 6 December 2025, the management of the Corporate Affairs Commission urged all PoS operators to immediately begin or complete their registration process, stressing that compliance is now compulsory and non-negotiable.

The commission described the enforcement as a necessary step to protect the public and strengthen the integrity of Nigeria’s financial ecosystem.
