MTN Uganda Unveils Instant Loan Platform to Boost MoMo Agent Liquidity

MTN Uganda has introduced the MoMo Agent Loans Marketplace, a digital platform designed to provide mobile money agents with rapid access to working capital and strengthen the resilience of the country’s largest mobile money network.

The initiative, launched in partnership with Letshego Uganda and dfcu Bank at the Protea Hotel by Marriott, enables agents to secure instant and short-term loans directly through the MoMo platform, helping them maintain sufficient float even during periods of peak demand.

Two tailored loan products are now available:

dfcu Bank Weekend Agent Loan: Agents can access between UGX 1 million and UGX 5 million instantly from Friday to Sunday, ensuring uninterrupted service over high-traffic weekends.

Letshego Agent Float Loan: Short-term financing for 7 to 14 days, allowing agents to quickly replenish float and avoid turning away customers due to insufficient funds.

Speaking at the launch, MTN Uganda Chief Executive Officer Richard Yego said, “These new facilities will significantly improve agent liquidity and confidence while managing customer transactions. This is just the beginning – we are already planning to expand the marketplace with additional products, longer tenors, and higher limits for agents with proven repayment records.

Jemima Kariuki-Njuguna, Chief Product Officer at MTN Uganda, highlighted the operational impact: “When an agent runs out of float during a customer deposit, the ability to access instant liquidity can mean the difference between completing the transaction and losing the customer. Stronger agent liquidity directly translates to a more reliable mobile money ecosystem and better digital financial services for communities nationwide”.

The collaboration between MTN Uganda, Letshego Uganda, and dfcu Bank addresses a long-standing challenge for MoMo agents: timely access to affordable working capital. By removing liquidity bottlenecks, the marketplace is expected to enhance service availability, boost agent earnings, and support Uganda’s broader financial and digital inclusion objectives.

The MoMo Agent Loans Marketplace is now live for eligible agents across the country.
