MTN’s Push to Provide Low-Cost 4G Phones to 1.2 Million Prepaid Users in South Africa

MTN South Africa is stepping up efforts to bridge the digital divide by announcing a new initiative to provide low-cost 4G-enabled smartphones to 1.2 million prepaid customers. The move, reported by Reuters, is part of MTN’s wider strategy to accelerate digital inclusion and expand mobile internet penetration across the country.

South Africa still faces significant gaps in affordable smartphone access, particularly among low-income and rural communities. MTN’s plan aims to tackle this by partnering with handset manufacturers to supply sub-$20 entry-level 4G devices, bundled with affordable data packages.

The telecom giant noted that while 4G network coverage reaches nearly 98% of South Africa’s population, device affordability remains a key barrier. Millions of South Africans are still using basic 2G and 3G phones, limiting their ability to participate fully in the digital economy.

By distributing these new smartphones, MTN hopes to unlock access to a wide range of services — from mobile banking and e-commerce to e-learning and healthcare platforms. Analysts suggest that the program could also accelerate the adoption of fintech services, as more South Africans gain access to mobile apps requiring 4G connectivity.

“Connectivity is not just about network coverage — it’s about ensuring that every South African can access the digital world affordably,” said Charles Molapisi, CEO of MTN South Africa.

The initiative comes at a time when competition among telecom operators is heating up, with Vodacom and Telkom also exploring similar low-cost device strategies. However, MTN’s large prepaid user base gives it a unique advantage in pushing the shift toward affordable 4G adoption.

With this rollout, MTN isn’t just selling devices — it’s positioning itself as a catalyst for digital transformation in South Africa’s mobile-first economy
