Morocco Emerges as Top Target for Web-Based Cyberattacks in Africa

A new Kaspersky report has placed Morocco among Africa’s most targeted nations for web-based cyberattacks, raising alarms about the country’s digital security posture as online activity continues to grow.

According to the findings, Morocco ranked third on the continent for detected web threats in 2025, trailing only behind South Africa and Nigeria. The report highlights that malicious links, phishing sites, and fraudulent downloads remain the most common entry points for attackers, who often exploit unsuspecting users through everyday browsing and mobile usage.

Kaspersky’s researchers revealed that Morocco has experienced a significant spike in phishing campaigns, many of which impersonate banks, government agencies, and e-commerce platforms. These campaigns aim to trick users into disclosing sensitive personal and financial information, often resulting in identity theft or drained bank accounts.

“Cybercriminals are constantly adapting their methods, making it harder for individuals and businesses to stay protected,” the report notes.

The risks are heightened by Morocco’s growing reliance on digital services and mobile banking, which, while convenient, also expose users to new attack vectors. Experts warn that without robust digital literacy and stronger local cybersecurity frameworks, everyday internet users remain vulnerable.

To counter these threats, cybersecurity specialists recommend a combination of public awareness campaigns, stronger regulation of online services, and cross-border collaboration. Morocco’s government has already begun expanding investment in cybersecurity training programs, aiming to prepare a new generation of experts to protect both public and private digital infrastructure.

The report concludes that while Morocco is making progress, the scale and persistence of attacks demand urgent, sustained action. As the country strengthens its digital economy, cybersecurity is no longer optional — it is central to ensuring both trust and safety online.
