African payments giant Flutterwave has announced a strategic partnership with Onafriq (formerly MFS Africa) to boost cross-border payments across the continent. The collaboration aims to simplify money movement between countries and improve financial access for individuals and businesses.
With Africa’s cross-border payment market estimated to be worth over $200 billion annually, this partnership is timely. One of the major hurdles for businesses and individuals has been the fragmented payment infrastructure, where sending money between African countries is often slow, expensive, and unreliable. Flutterwave and Onafriq’s solution promises to change that.
The partnership will integrate Onafriq’s vast mobile money network — spanning 40 African countries and over 500 million wallets — with Flutterwave’s robust payment technology. This means that customers and merchants can send and receive money seamlessly across multiple countries without the high costs traditionally associated with cross-border transactions.
Commenting on the development, Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola emphasized the company’s mission to “simplify payments for endless possibilities.” He noted that enabling smooth cross-border transactions is essential for driving intra-African trade, a key agenda of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
On the other side, Onafriq CEO Dare Okoudjou described the collaboration as a way to “connect the fragmented pieces of Africa’s payment puzzle.” By bridging fintech innovation with mobile money, the companies aim to support SMEs, freelancers, and everyday consumers who face difficulties in moving money across borders.
Analysts believe this partnership could accelerate financial inclusion and unlock new opportunities for African businesses to scale regionally. If successful, it may also set the stage for more collaboration between fintech giants seeking to unify Africa’s digital payments ecosystem.
