Africa’s fight against cybercrime scored a major victory this year after authorities successfully dismantled over 11,000 malicious online infrastructures during Operation Serengeti 2025, a continent-wide initiative led by INTERPOL. The operation brought together law enforcement agencies, cybersecurity experts, and financial crime investigators from multiple African countries to tackle the region’s rapidly escalating digital threats.
According to INTERPOL, the malicious infrastructures included phishing websites, fake banking portals, fraudulent e-commerce platforms, and networks used to distribute malware. Many of these cyber setups were directly linked to organized crime groups targeting African citizens and businesses with scams that drained millions of dollars from the economy.
In addition to shutting down online crime networks, authorities also seized digital evidence, froze financial accounts connected to fraudulent activities, and arrested several key suspects. The collaborative operation demonstrates the growing commitment of African nations to strengthen their cyber resilience and safeguard the region’s digital transformation.
Cybercrime remains a serious challenge for Africa, with phishing, business email compromise (BEC), and ransomware attacks continuing to rise. Experts note that criminals are exploiting the continent’s fast-growing internet adoption, mobile money platforms, and limited public awareness of online threats.
Operation Serengeti 2025 highlights the importance of joint efforts across borders, combining resources and intelligence to neutralize threats before they cause large-scale damage. Analysts believe this coordinated approach will set a strong precedent for future crackdowns on cybercriminal networks in Africa.
