MTN South Africa Launches Affordable 5G Smartphone to Bridge Connectivity Gap

In late 2024, MTN South Africa introduced the Icon 5G, a budget-friendly 5G-enabled smartphone designed to address the digital divide and accelerate migration from outdated 2G and 3G devices

Device & Pricing Details

The MTN Icon 5G is priced at R2,499 (~US$138) for prepaid customers. For those on contract, it’s available from R219/month over 36 months through MTN’s Core price plan. The device is manufactured by ZTE Corp, placing competent hardware in the hands of more users.

Features & Offerings

In addition to 5G connectivity, the Icon 5G includes a 6.6-inch display, 128GB of internal storage, and a large 5,000mAh battery ensuring enough power for daily use. The rear camera setup features a 50MP + 2MP dual camera module, while the front sports an 8MP selfie shooter. New purchases on prepaid also come with a generous once-off 21GB anytime data and 3GB YouTube data when customers recharge with R50.

Bridging the Digital Divide

MTN frames the Icon 5G release as a vital step toward modernizing connectivity. With South Africa planning to phase out 2G and 3G networks by the end of 2027, affordable 5G-capable devices are critical to ensuring that people are not left behind. The inclusion of data bonuses for prepaid users further lowers barriers for adoption.

Bottom Line

The MTN Icon 5G represents more than just a new device—it’s a bridge toward a more connected South Africa. By offering 5G at an accessible price point and supporting infrastructure shifts away from legacy networks, MTN is helping ensure that broader tech inclusion isn’t just aspirational but actionable.
